Kelly Slaven

Meet Kelly

Kelly Slaven (she/her) has spent her career dedicated to the well-being, support and empowerment of clients. Her passions as a therapist include providing evidence-based treatments for those who have been impacted by a history or single instance of trauma, providing insight and support for women experiencing abuse or control in their relationship with an intimate partner, and generally seeking to empower and embolden women to walk forward in their lives with full confidence and esteem.

Starting her work as a therapist at Genesis Women’s Shelter and Support and ultimately becoming the Director of Clinical & Professional Services there, Kelly spent 12 years working with women who were experiencing power and control from their partner, helping them to identify their strengths, process their trauma and determining the best path forward for them. Additionally, Kelly led a team of 20 therapists who collectively provided thousands of hours of therapy for the women and children of Dallas. Most recently, Kelly spent almost 6 years serving at the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center (DCAC). As Chief Clinical Officer, Kelly supervised over 30 clinicians and students, supervising over 19,000 clinical hours, who provide treatment for the worst child abuse cases in the Dallas area.

Kelly has been trained in several modalities of treatment, most related to the treatment of traumatic experiences.  Kelly is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Certified as well as an EMDR Consultant and an EMDR Trainer.  Kelly is certified in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Treatment (TF-CBT). Kelly has also trained with Dr. Bruce Perry in his Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT), has been trained in Problematic Sexual Behavior Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (PSB-CBT), and has been trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.

In addition to her therapeutic work, Kelly regularly provides expert witness testimony in cases involving intimate partner violence, child abuse, and trauma’s impact on the brain. She has an extensive background in providing trainings, ranging from local events to international conferences. As an EMDR Trainer, Kelly provides 2-3 EMDR Basic Trainings each year through The Haven Wellness Center.

Kelly graduated from The University of Kansas with a Bachelor’s in English and California State University, Long Beach, with a Master’s in Social Work. Kelly lives in East Dallas with her wife, kids, and their zoo of animals. Kelly is a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Kelly’s therapeutic style is one of directive warmth, looking to utilize the strengths of the client and to empower them to move forward toward hope, freedom and confidence. Her style embodies the very idea of a haven: a place of safety, refuge, or a port from the storm. She would be honored to journey alongside you.

Kelly is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Supervisor in Texas (#37399).
